Exploratory Essay Cyber bullying : School Involvement My ninth grade year in my Civics class we had a project called project citizens. We were in a group and we had to present information about a certain topic we picked as a class. My class choose cyber bullying. From all the information we got and stories we had to read I really took an interest in this topic. Finding out about all these teen suicides and how people say it really is not a big issue because teens are going to be teens; since when did teens drive their peers to killing themselves. They put someone in the state of mind that death is better than life. I think this is a big problem. Death happens everyday and I think this way is a way that we can help prevent it. I don’t think the government or schools are doing enough about this issue and I think the school should be more involved. Rather it happen in school out of school or even if it has nothing to do with school, it affects the people lives in school and for the victim it distracts them from work or actually being involved with school. My research from StopCyberBullying.org states “Schools can be very effective brokers in working with the parents to stop and remedy cyber bullying situations. They can also educate the students on cyber ethics and the law. If schools are creative, they can sometimes avoid the claim that their actions exceeded their legal authority for off-campus cyber bullying actions. We recommend that a provision is added to the school's acceptable use policy reserving the right to discipline the student for actions taken off-campus if they are intended to have an effect on a student or they adversely affect the safety and well-being of student while in school.” Teenagers having to skip school because something that was posted on a social network that night. Not being able to concentrate in class because kids snicker behind her/him over what someone said the night before on face book about them. Everything that happen out of school eventually comes back to the school. I would know I am a teenager Thousand of teens explore social networkings from twitter to facebook and many more and teens are always on cell phones and any type of technology to keep updated with what’s going on in their life , peers and celebrities. A couple of years ago teens started taking these social networks for the wrong things, exposing peers making teenagers life miserable all through technology, and for what? They think it is cool. Why would anyone think this is cool? Harassing people so that everyone can see. Nothing is private through the internet and it never goes away. When you put something up there its there for good and anyone can see even ten years for now. That is not even the bad part about cyber bullying, so many teens are taking there life because of being cyber bullied, harassed, and made fun of through the internet. From the little things that they actually did to complete lies. No one should have to go through that. Parents are having to bury their kids over something that could be stopped if they really try. Friends and families are Lee 3 losing love ones over something someone think is “cool”. Nothing is cool about harassing someone so much they get the idea to kill themselves. For some teenager not matter what they did in life to actually take their own life. For them to have the feeling that death is the only way out. Some people may say “oh they took the easy way out of all this they were crazy for killing themselves“, but you never know how strong or weak someone is. You never know how much a person can take you don’t know their lifestyle or what they are going through. A person trying their best to bring them down could just be the end for them and maybe they feel that is the only way for peace. People making hell on earth for them is not cool nor does it make sense. After saying all this my real question is should school be involved with cyber bullying no matter if it is done outside of school and has nothing to do with school ? I mean would it actually make an impact of cyber bullying if school was more involved would their be an increase or decrease in cyber bullying. I want to know what you think after taking a look at my blog.
